A massage parlours in Sydney and Melbourne have opened in the heart of the CBD as part of a new initiative aimed at addressing the growing issue of leukaemia.

“It’s been a really great thing for people’s health, especially those of us with cancer, and they’re happy to have it in the city and also have the option of coming in,” says Tara, who has stage four brain cancer.
“We’ve been in contact with the health authorities and we’re hoping it will work.”
Melbourne has the highest rate of leukemias in Australia and the Melbourne Massages therapy Centre has a capacity of 200 people.
The Sunshine Coast is one of the most cancer-hit areas in Australia with a cancer death rate of about 20 per cent.
But the new clinics will be just the start of a national campaign aimed at finding a cure for leukaemias.
“This is an exciting time in Australia,” says Dr Matthew Hatton, who chairs the Cancer Council of Australia.
“People have got really good cancer and they need to be supported.”
There’s not a lot of money for this, and we really need to find out if there’s any money for that in other countries.
“He says the Government needs to invest in the problem, which is causing a huge financial burden on people.”
The more people we can get access to this kind of therapy, the more we can improve the quality of life for people who are affected by this,” he says.”
A lot of people don’t have access to the right treatments.
“Health Minister David Davis says the move is about getting people the care they need.”
Everyone should have access in this country to cancer treatment, so I think it’s really important that we don’t lose that opportunity, because it’s so important for people to be able to access this,” Dr Davis says.
The Health Department says it’s also making sure it’s not just people with cancer who benefit from the clinics.”
With the new centres, the Government is investing in people with low income who are in the most need of the best cancer treatments,” Dr Hatton says.
A spokesperson for the Health Department said the government was working with the NSW Health Department to develop the strategy to help people.
